‘Bichchagadu’ movie fame hero Vijay Antony comes up with yet another interesting and different concept movie ‘Kaasi’. Vijay Antony movies are know to have a very interesting subject targeting mainly the B and c audience. This movie is directed by Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi. The movie is released today both in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously as ‘Kaali’ and ‘Kaasi’ respectively. Let’s see what is the special thing ‘Kaasi’ offers.
Story: Basically the whole movie revolves around an adopted son’s search for his original parents. Coming into the story, Dr. Kaasi is the M.D. of one of the prestigious hospitals (Barath Hospitals) in U.S. with career success rate of 98%. He leads a very sophisticated and luxurious lifestyle. From the childhood Kaasi tends to get nightmares, which Kaasi gets no clue of. Suddenly, his mom gets ill and both of her kidneys fail. Dr. Kaasi decides to donate his kidney to his mother, but Kaasi’s father stops him from doing so by revealing the shocking fact that Dr. Kaasi is their adopted son. Now Kaasi realizes his nightmares are someway connected to his original parents and Kaasi flies to Kancharlapalem in Andhra Pradesh to know his roots. The only thing he knows is his mother Parvathi died and his father cheated his mom. From now till the end, the whole story revolves on Kaasi’s attempts to find his father. After entering the village, on a couple of occasions, Kaasi thinks he almost found his father but he comes to know that they are not his father. Who are they? Who is Kaasi’s father? Will Kaasi be able to find his father or not, if he finds, how? The movie ‘Kaasi’ is all about this.Performance: Vijay Antony appears in three different avatars in this movie, as a doctor, college student, and dacoit. He performed very well in all the three characters. Coming to heroines, we have three heroines in this movie. Anjali has hardly anything to perform in this movie and she looks plumy too. In fact all the scenes she appears seem boring and annoying. Shilpa Manjunath looks beautiful as a village girl and has role offers her something to perform. Sunaina fits to the role perfectly as a dalit girl. Veteran actor Nasser has a brief appearance as a dacoit and he makes the character interesting. There is comedy track in this movie, but it is handled only by one character ‘Gopi’ and the comedy looks like a typical tamil comedy.
Technical Department: The concept of the story is mainly on untouchability. The director thought of highlighting the untouchability issue and create awareness, but couldnt show it in an interesting way. Dialogues are fine. Editing and screenplay seem lackluster. Good care has been taken to suit our Telugu nativity, but still there are areas where flaws are clearly visible in scenes like the cab having ‘TN’ registration in Kancharlapalem, Andhra Pradesh. Music and background music can be given average score. The song explaining the importance and greatness of mother is the highlight song. Production values are fine. Cinematography looks good. Direction wise, Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi has selected a nice concept, but she couldn’t succeed in giving this an impacting touch. As saif played the role of young Rishi Kapoor in ‘Love Aaj Kal’ Vijay Antony is seen performing the younger roles of two other different characters in this movie. The director handled this well. All in all, ‘Kaasi’ is about the issue of untouchability which is not presented well and it’s better not to touch this movie.
